MINI POPULAR SERIE

A REVERSE PEDAGOGY EXPERIENCE

The mini série populaire (mini popular serie) is based on reverse pedagogy. We decided to invite kids to appropriate our Série Populaire (Popular Serie) and make it their own, letting them create elements they can manage themselves for their parents. Parents are given a physical, dance experience thanks to their kids’ imagination, universe, words and dances. The mini-series is made up of three episodes: J’peux pas j’ai Bal (I can’t, I’ve got a dance party), J’peux pas j’ai Bingo (I can’t, I’ve got Bingo) and Fais danser tes vieux : Mode d’Emploi (Make the Oldies Dance: Instruction manual).

J'peux pas j'ai bal (I can’t, I’ve got a dance party) gives children a similar framework to I Wanna dance with somebody, allowing them to create their own version. The kids start by taking the floor, then they take possession of the mic, create a playlist, assemble a sound landscape from dance memories of their parents and neighbours, write, teach and learn dances. The dance party is divided into a warm-up, a dance of faces, a dance of actions, a dance with partners, and, of course, ultimate clubbing!

The project was created within the framework of the ‘creation en cours’ 2017 scheme run by Ateliers Medicis.

J’peux pas j’ai bingo (I can’t, I’ve got Bingo) offers kids a similar framework to Loto3000, which the kids then appropriate. The performance layout is in-the-round and the kids’ parents play lotto or bingo to win unique prizes, devised and danced by their children. The prizes are inspired by old photos of dance, the kids’ biographies, and fictional stories of characters they have made up and drawn themselves. Each prize is announced by a piece of promotional poetry dreamt up by the kids. Prizes are created through dance, drawing, writing, and philosophy workshops.

The project was created in 2021 within the framework of Collectif ÈS’s collaboration with La Rampe – La Ponatière, Echirolles, a Scène conventionnée Art et Création (performing arts theatre with a public service contract with the French Culture Ministry for the arts and new productions).

Fais danser tes vieux : Mode d’Emploi (Make the Oldies Dance: instruction manual) offers kids a similar framework to Mode d’Emploi à danser (Instruction manual for dancing) but lets them create their own instruction manual. Six dances are imagined and devised, each wilder than the one before. The dances are put together using a game of chance and gigantic dice and the parents then set the dancefloor on fire as they follow their kids’ sound advice and imagination.
